LWV of Florida Encourages Individuals with Disabilities to Increase Political Participation, Run for Office

Following continued negative rhetoric towards individuals with disabilities, especially throughout the 2022 election cycle, League of Women Voters of Florida President Cecile M. Scoon, Esq. issues the following statement:

The League of Women Voters of Florida believes all voices should be at the table in our democracy. This is crucial to ensure different ideas are brought forth to improve our communities with limited resources. Persons with varied abilities are needed at the table to help craft legislation and policy that can benefit all. When a person with a disability participates in civic society by running for office and raising issues that they understand from their unique perspectives, all people benefit not just the disabled. For example, when we plan for mobility-needs, we are also making plans that will benefit all citizens as we age and need additional assistance later in life. The League proudly welcomes the voices and perspectives of those with disabilities as their viewpoints and lived experiences can only enhance our abilities to meet the needs of all citizens.
