League of Women Voters Urges Legislative Action after Ybor City Shooting

YBOR CITY, Fla.  – The League of Women Voters of Hillsborough & Pasco Counties and the League of Women Voters of Florida are devastated by the tragedy that unfolded in Ybor City on October 29.  This senseless act of violence serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to our existing gun safety laws in Florida. We as Floridians cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the devastating consequences of lax regulations that allow such tragedies to persist.

The Florida legislature will convene for its annual session in January 2024. The League of Women Voters has held the position since 1990 that the proliferation of handguns and semi-automatic assault weapons in the United States is a major health and safety threat to its citizens. The League plans to support common sense gun legislation, including increased awareness and application of Florida’s existing Risk Protection Order law.

The League will use our power to protect our communities.  Let us honor the memories of the victims by standing united in our commitment to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again.
