Response to shocking conditions at Homestead Transitional Shelter for immigrant Children

FRIDAY, JULY 12, 2019 — The League of Women Voters of Florida today appealed to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, U.S. Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio to take action to protect the more than 3,000 migrant children being house in shocking conditions at the for-profit Homestead Transitional Shelter at Homestead Air Force Base. Click here for the letters.

“We have asked before that conditions be met to safeguard fair treatment of detained immigrant children. But with near daily reports of cruel and inhumane conditions at the facility, it has become more than evident that no such action has been taken. This is shameful,” said Florida League President Patricia Brigham.

League members have been holding silent vigils at Homestead and are determined to keep up the fight to win justice for the children.

“To think that the State of Florida is reportedly paying a private company $750 a day per child to keep them imprisoned for no fault of their own, is a scar on the souls of all caring people,” Brigham said.

We urge all Floridians who believe in justice for all, to write to the governor and senators NOW and demand the children be set free.
