Dr. Jill Lewis-Spector, 2nd Vice President

Dr. Jill Lewis-Spector currently chairs the League of Women Voters of Florida Education Action Team alongside her local League’s Education Committee (LWV of Sarasota County). Formerly of New Jersey, she was a member of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey’s Board of Directors (2017-2020), founded and served as co-president of the LWV-Greater New Brunswick Area (NJ), and chaired the state League’s Education Committee.

In her professional life, Dr. Lewis-Spector is Professor Emerita of Literacy Education at New Jersey City University. She was President of the International Literacy Association (2014-2015). She has authored/co-authored 8 books, numerous research articles and has been a keynote speaker on literacy policy and instruction throughout the United States and in more than 30 countries, where she has also worked extensively with various governmental agencies, advocating for better schools, democratic classrooms, and more resources for teachers.

Dr. Lewis-Spector received her Ed.D. from Rutgers University in Education Policy, her M.A. degree and Reading Specialist certification from George Washington University, and her B.A. in English Education from SUNY Buffalo.  Most recently, she has had several of her photographs accepted for juried shows at Art Center Sarasota. She enjoys living in Sarasota with her husband David and their whippet, Sunny.
